My lessons from the beaches of D-Day this summer

private pictures summer 2025

This summer I stood on the beaches of Normandy in France, where the tide tells us the stories of June 6, 1944. The sand looks peaceful now, but every dune carries the memory of young men who crossed the ocean to defend values bigger than themselves. Standing there, it’s impossible not to feel humbled by their courage and the enormity of their sacrifice.

As business coaches, we don’t face gunfire. Yet the essence of leadership we saw on those beaches remains so relevant: clarity of purpose, willingness to take responsibility, and the courage to move forward despite uncertainty.

Too often, organisations drift because their business leaders wait for perfect conditions. They don't take enough, calculated, risks. However, history reminds us: decisive action, informed by a strong mission, shapes the future.

When we work with leadership teams, we nudge them to look beyond their comfort zones. To continue to speak up for what really matters, to build trust across divides, to keep investing in a healthy working culture. To take the next business step; even when the outcomes aren’t guaranteed. That mindset —courage anchored in service— is what turns strategy into action.

As you read this, ask yourself:

  • What is the real challenge you know you must face?

  • What conversations or decisions require more bravery from you?

  • How can you honour those who gave so much by leading with integrity and purpose today?

The waves at the beaches of Omaha and Utah keep rolling in. They remind us that real progress always carries some amount of risk. And that is ok! The courage to begin is what keeps freedom, innovation, and growth alive.

Hope this inpsires.
