Lance Armstrong

The Tour de France has been going on for a week now. Lance Armstrong has won seven (7!) times in a row between 1999 and 2005 and is second to the overall leader. We still have two weeks to go. Anything can happen.

It’s interesting to study the behaviour of Lance Armstrong a little closer. Lance Armstrong is famous for his preparations for each stage. He trains for some of the passes multiple times. During the actual course he evades risks. He makes sure that he cycles in the right place in the field. Of the whole field, he is the one with the most preparation. Failing to plan, is planning to fail…

There are many parallels that can be made between sports and leading an organisation. One of the skills a good leader has to have is to think strategically and in details. This isn’t always easy. One moment you are discussing the strategic direction for the next five years of your company, while five minutes later you are checking a spreadsheet to see whether the presented numbers are correct. More often than not it isn’t enough for the leader to focus on the big picture. He or she, just like Lance Armstrong, has got to have an eye for detail to make a difference.

We shall see if Lance Armstrong will become the overall leader again in two weeks.
