The plush is tempting

Loads of people would like to get a place in the management office. But the top is narrow and the management table only has a limited amount of chairs.
Most will therefore never reach it. They forget to build sufficient relationships with stakeholders along the way to their dreamed promotion. Often I see that someone gathers insufficient support from all groups surrounding the organisation who influence such a decision. We can distinguish seven different stakeholders: the current CEO, employees, direct colleagues, large clients of the company, supervisory board and possibly analysts and stockholders.

A good way to get the support of all stakeholders is by actively working on your personal development. I often see that the opposite is argued: ‘to be the ideal candidate, you can’t have any weaknesses.’ This, even though it strengthens your candidacy when you actively develop yourself. For instance, to actively work on the feedback you have been given a from 360 questionnaire. Involve your current boss and other colleagues in your development to leader.

Finally, you should show you’re ready for the big stuff without offending your current manager. It’s a matter of growing antlers and learning to calculate sensitivities. Leading your current team and giving good performance is the best advertisement for your candidacy.
