The first 100 days

Research shows that 40% of all senior executives fail in their roles within the first 18 months! I was shocked by the number, but it really is 40%! When an external candidate starts in a top function, the first 100 days greatly define your success or failure. In those first three months, and a few more days, you have to do three things: gain control, build a team around you and turn in the first results which are better than what was expected of you. These are the priorities you should focus on in the first three months.

You can only make a first impression once. You should be aware that everything you say and do is communicated and interpreted. It’s about your presentation, but also with whom and in which order you plan your meetings in the first few days. It’s often seen as the value you assign to people. Take control of your appointments as much as possible. I often see people just taking over a schedule that is made for them and not making it their own.

The way your appointment is announced, greatly defines the way you are introduced. It leaves an imprint on people. I can advise you to write your own introduction which is sent throughout the company.

The Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu told us 2500 years ago what leadership means to him: but of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aims fulfilled, they will all say, 'We did this ourselves.' And this is so true.
