Online identity

The web 2.0 has become a reality. In the last month Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Hyves and Facebook alone had more than 2 billion visitors worldwide! This while a typical 1.0 company like bol.com grows another 37% and they are having their most busy December ever. LinkedIn, an internet 2.0 company, is considering an IPO. More and more links are established between social media websites. Only last week LinkedIn has made a link to Twitter.

Your digital identity is becoming more important. Even worse: the way you brand yourself, will increasingly positively or negatively influence your career. It’s become too easy to just ignore the social media on the internet. It’s practically an art to spend the correct amount of time and attention to it. This way you could use it to your advantage. It’s not only about the identity of the company you work for, but more often about your personal identity. You are becoming your own brand.
At our company, we are getting questions about this more often now. Although the developments pursue each other at high speed, at this point we give our clients the following guidelines.
  1. Choose which social media you want to be active in. For corporate life LinkedIn.com has almost become a 'condisio sine qua non'. So enrol if you haven’t done so yet.
  2. Tend to your online identity. Make sure it matches you. Make sure that your Curriculum Vitae is correctly filled in and represents correctly what you’ve done and more important what you’ve achieved in your career.
  3. Realise that what you put onto the internet never leaves it. This puts a great emphasis on your reputation. So watch out what private information you put on there. It could hit you in the face when you don’t expect it. It’s better to keep the private information to a minimum.
  4. Google your name, see what comes up, or doesn’t… and take action if needed.
  5. Prefer spending more, rather than less time on placing a professional looking photograph.
